Samand
Samand, the National Automobile, Beginning of the production project in 1996, Made in 2000 After three decades from production of Paykan, with no alteration in its form or structure, the need to design and manufacture a new automobile quite different from the present type was strongly felt.
Therefore, Iran Khodro management decided to design and produce prototypes of the national automobile, called Samand, in Iran Khodro Research Center with cooperation of Iranian experts and engineers, in line with the national development strategies and in competition with foreign automobile manufacturing companies.
In this automobile, the most modern systems of safety and comfort have been anticipated, including seat belts for all passengers, central lock, powered window winders, air conditioner, radio cassette player, left and right wing mirrors adjustable from the interior, etc.
This automobile has been designed by the aid of Iranian and foreign consultants, its engine is 1761 cm3, none of the parts of the present Paykan have been used in it, and it is a completely new and modern automobile with high safety, front axle, numerous accessories, and newly designed body.
It will be even of higher quality than Peugeot 405. By the design and manufacturing of Iran Samand, Iran will join the automobile making countries of the world. Annual production level will start with 5000 units, to be increased gradually to over 200,000 units within five years.

In pursuant of Paykan car production in Iran, and due to the ever-increasing of population, demand of agricultural and animal husbandry unites, and also urban transitions, it was imperatively felt more than before the producing of Paykan pick-up solely in Iran, for transportation of goods. In the meantime, the vehicle manufacturer companies after producing a model, generally provided the possible means for designing and developing of the other versions concerning the same model of Pick-up.
It means that after passenger car production, it was easy to produce Station, Pick-up, Coupe, and Cabriolet as well. Due to the special usage of pick-ups that has distinct characteristic in power train, screw spring and body, it’s production currently continuous

Why this thread is so dead? I love the cars (who not?) Anyway I read somewhere (I cannot post links blah blah) that the Iran Khodro want to design six new entirely iranian producted cars. It would be cool! Here is some pics about the iranian cars ( 405SLX,Saipa factory,Soren at a russian car show(from samand-russia'dot'ru))

samands are actually good cars (not the first versians as they were terribe). the only downside is the price to which they are sold within iran which is way to high. Irankhodro as a giant business is unfortuently not the best places to be working for.

It is because you are just a number, get used to it if you work in that business. It is universal in engineering.

Back before the revolution, Jeep, Chevy Blazer, Cherokee, were very common in Iran. After revolution, the most commons are Toyota, Nissan and one Korean brand.

Yeah, I know, the profit margin of Iran-Khodro is outrageous. Several years ago, when the responsible ministry was explaining the break-out of the price, if I recall correctly, the profit margin was something in the range of 200-250%.
It is because you are just a number, get used to it if you work in that business. It is universal in engineering.

It's cheaper to make a peugeot in iran than in france. And lets face facts the french are lazy; 35 hour work weeks and two months paid holiday.

i know 2 people that work in irankhodro and compared to saipa it doesnt offer them much. i also have 4 relatives who work in saipa with one in the top finance office. saipa offers higher wages and more "emkanat". i can understand that irankhodro has nearly 60,000 employees but its revenue is also high, it wouldnt hurt them to increase wages.

i have a distant relative who has a samand, he can change from gas to petrol with a touch of a button.
however, natural gas is not good for the engine not to mention that it also decreases speed and ability by nearly half.

yes it's correct but for the old engine which was designed for petrol ,and converted so it could use CNG ,the new engine is designed from the scratch for CNG as primary fuel and use petrol as secondary fuel.

but it still doesnt change the fact that it has a negative affect on its performance right?, if it was like this then ofcourse the whole world would pursue in this direction
Not necessarily. NG has an octane no. of 115 better than even the best gasoline available which is usually not more than 95 even with additives. With that high an octane its possible to design engines that have high compression ratios coupled with twin charging, it would make a smaller engine compared to petrol with much higher powerout put not possible with petrol engines. But such an engine though much more efficient and enviromentally friendly than petrol consuming lesser fuel of a cheaper nature than petrol, has got two major drawbacks.
1- It has to be just a NG engine No dual fuel type. That is no petrol backup system. Though it is not a draw back onto itself but given the mostly undeveloped nature of NG filling stations infrastructure around the world, it would make refueling more of an issue. But petrol is available everywhere.
2- Countries that do not have NG resources have ultimatley to import it and importing NG is much more difficult than petrol because its a gas and the latter a liquid, so the handling is quite difficult. Imagine a country like Chad wants to import fuel and given its location at the centre of africa its much easier for petrol to reach there than NG.
But overall NG engines have a higher performance as well as extended lives with very lower maintenance and fewer waste production as CO2, SO and NO emission can be as much as half that of petrol engines plus fewer oil change due to cleaner nature of NG. But the engine has to be designed for NG older engines like that of Paykan are not compatible with NG as fuel.

One very good example of a NGV is honda civic NG which was designed to be run solely on NG, but ofcourse the lack refueling infrastructure was hampering the sale so they started to give out their custormers a small sized refueling unit which would be installed on the normal NG line (city gas) coming to your home and it would refuel the vehicle overnight which would be very economical as the city gas is very cheaper than fancy refueling stations but ofcourse then if you travel out of town then you would not have access to your home.
Further advances are coupling the NGV with hybrid technology to make them kinda super efficient as compared to petrol with much lesser fuel costs than any petrol engine. But ofcourse for that you have to have abundant NG resources. Countries with no such resources need not think in this direction.

You mean Japanese cars from 80's and 90's. The american cars from from 80's and 90's are too ugly and not reliable.

Well what i am saying is that over all American made cars from 80's and 90's were not reliable compare to Japanese and german cars. And i a saying this base on experiences. I live in California and most of my family members are in car business and i have seen lots of different cars. One of the reasons that Japanese cars were and are more reliable because they way their production line operate and that is if there is problem they will stop the production line to fix the problem and but in american car factories the production line never stops and they just recently the adopt the Japanese model. And look around and see how many 1980's honda and toyota with over 200000 miles you see on the road and how many 1980's ford and chevy you see. The number speaks for it self. Now you might been very good and on time changing oil and maintenance with your car and that was the main reason for been more reliable then average american car.

If you wan't numbers to speak for themselves look at cars older than that. How many Japanese cars do you see from the 50's, 60's or 70's? Virtually none.
I have a fully functional 1952 sedan with the factory engine in it, Japanese cars don't last that long.

"Have you ever been to Wales, Baldrick?"
"No, but I've often thought I'd like to."
"Well don't, it's a ghastly place. Huge gangs of tough sinewy men roam the valleys terrifying people with their close harmony singing. You need half a pint of phlegm in your throat just to pronounce the placenames. Never ask for directions in Wales Baldrick, you'll be washing spit out of your hair for a fortnight."

There are no Japanese cars form 50's and 60's and 70's. Japanese industry got destroyed during WWII and it took them 35 years to rebuilt that's why all the Japanese made cars are from 1980 forward. I whish people do some research before posting on this site.I know you are proud to be American and like American cars but the sad reality for American automobile manufactures is that they lost ground ( as far as reliability and fuel efficiency ) to Japanese during 80's and 90's and now it might be too late for them to catch up because of health of US economy. There is a estimate that GM , Ford , Chrysler ,they need $500 billion to retool their factories ... money that they don't have and they can't borrow because of credit crunch....My guess is Ford and GM are going to have a same fait as english car manufactures. They are going to be break apart and sold to other countries....
