The maritime wing of the Revolutionary Guard Corps
26Feb2006
In addition to a modest number of seagoing warships, including submarines, frigates, and large patrol vessels, as well a some amphibious ships and mine warfare vessels, the Iranian Navy, and the maritime wing of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, owns a substantial number small vessels. Not just the "official" small craft, but lots and lots of small boats that regularly carry guys with guns. No official numbers are given, but it appears that the Iranians have several thousand such small craft. These range in size from 23 foot long, motorized "Boston whalers," up to 65 feet long, 28-ton MIG-G-1900 patrol boats, with a few old American "Swift" boats thrown in.

These vessels are armed in various ways. The tiniest craft usually carry small arms, and personnel aboard have been observed wielding hand-held anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons. The larger ones usually have heavy machine guns and light cannon. Many of these boats are fast, some able to make as much as 60 kilometers an hour. These craft are ideally suited to "guerrilla warfare at sea" in the constrained waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, particularly since major navies lack much capability to oppose "swarm" attacks by large numbers of fast surface craft.

well if we are going to seriously consider the pc...

That .50 cal would sink it with any sustained fire, much less that silly motor in the back wouldn't get him very far.

Firing my .50 cal on the hummer back in the day, would rock the vehicle back FEET...not to mention the inability of the gunner to move/shoot/control the vehicle.

they are a couple of1000 suicide boats ,and that means if a ship get attacked by 200-300 of the boats the ship have no chance to defend self because it's impposible to hit somuch boats(actullay bombs) at the same time.

How ?? that's a good quastion. i said before too "War is full of surprises"
so it's better no one begin a war.
we did in last millitary maneuver such exercise. if a ship get attacked by 20 fast boats with RPG's and other weapon then he wants to retaliate so they will hit them, but if they get attacked by 100 fast boats how could they hit back?
That's why i say never count of great and modern weapon , ofcourse they are usefull but we saw in the war with iRAQ that we can hurt the enmy with not so special weapons.
IRGC has more then 4000 fast boats ready fo such action in Persian Gulf.

Korosh jan,

It was late in the war, when the US Navy was increasing is pressence in Khalije Fars. They had 6 warships in the Gulf at the start of war. They would increase that number to 30 by 1988. Iranian Navy operated with impunity for almost the entire war (Iraqi Navy was destroyed in a matter of weeks by Colonel Shahid Abbas Dowran early in the war). US intervention changed this, and took away Iranian control of the Gulf.

This is when Sepah Navy was founded. They used small gun boats (similar to the ones used in Operation Kheibar) in large numbers. Martyrdom Operation was when they tried to ram boats filled with explosives into American warships.

Did this work?

The Iranians used small armed boats to move into the swampy regions in southern Iraq aswell, didn't they?

@Mohmar
Yes. Those were used in Operation Kheiber: the Struggle for the Liberation of Majnoon Islands
They were very successful in the marshlands. The Ba'athist Generals were utter dumbasses, sending tanks to marshes. They were sitting ducks for our gunboats.

@Korosh
Unfortunately, Korosh jan, no. It did not work.

I'm not sure they were that dumb. Their main problem was that whenever they tried to implement some new tactic they came up with, Saddam had them executed.

Yes, the primary source of stupudity came from Saddam, who insisted upon sending tanks to mountains and marshes! And on bombing runways, when the bombs Iraqi fighters were equipped with were physically unable to do any damage to Iranian runways. Often times, an Iraqi pilot, would pass the chance at shooting down F-4s in their take-off process, only to be shot down by those very same F-4s! Still, on a more regional level, such things could have been avoided.

Also, hadn't Iran recently upgraded their hangar-armor so that even if the Iraqi aircraft bombed them, the damage to the aircraft within was minimal?

Indeed. As hard as it is to believe, only one aircraft in all of Mehrabad was seriously damaged, and it was repaired in a matter of weeks.

The mad cow and bird flu are a figment of the pharmaceutical industry to receive funding from the state, i.e. taxpayers. :(

Okay, so they're real, but nowhere near as dangerous as the media scoop suggests. ****loads of people die of all sorts of other diseases each day.
