Im writing a scription on the taleban, and as they are mainly Pathan I need to know when the Pathan people (or pashtun or pakhtun, if you like) converted to islam.
According to one source I got they were muslim right from the word go, because their mythical ancestral father (Kaees Abd ur-Rasheed?) converted right after Muhammad received the divine message. It doesn't seem credible to me, as there were Pathans way before Muhammad even lived - the pashtunwali some rural pathans are still following is pre-islamic, and this proves my point.
So, any one of you know during which period of time the pathan tribes converted? Thanks in advance :)

I have asked two pathans and they both gave me the same Kais story. They claim they were jewish before. I think u should try to get hold of Prof. Ahmed Hassan Dani of Quaid-i-Azam University. He is the best person to help.

There was a professor of anthropology from Tel Aviv University, (yes, he was Jewish), who followed on the thesis that the Pashtun were descendants of the original Bani-Israel, (the Israelites).
After the return from captivity from Babylon, quite a few members of the Israelites made their way East, along the Silk Trail to China, as this is where the riches lay, rather than return to a Roman occupied Jerusalem.
One of the ancient cities in Asia is Samarkand. An Aramaic name for 'City of Samerians'.
Although Islam was established around 870AD, it is said that the Pashtun never truly embraced it, instead clinging to a tribal law known as 'Pashtunwali', which remarkably, is identical to the Old Testament commandments.

I am a Pakistani Pathan. I am from the nation of Pakistan, my whole family is from Pakistan, and we have no traces leading to other countries(Many people call Pakistani - Pathans Afghans who are refugees, but I am not an Afghan so don't get me mixed up). But the Pathan people, mine in particular have traces leading to Aryans and Israelites. Pathans are considered to be known as "The Lost people of Israel". I read that in a book on Pakistan, dunno if it's true or not. I am unsre however when the Pathans converted to Islam.
