--The German Navy is testing the compatibility of the Finnish Navy's Jurmo class landing craft with combat support ship FGS Frankfurt am Main in Helsinki on Monday, Finnish Defence Forces paper Ruotuväki reported on its website on Sunday.

"The Germans need this type of vessel and they are interested. Jurmo is one option," the host of the naval visit, Commander Aimo Jokela, told Ruotuväki.
-- Finnish landing craft fare well in German Navy tests

Tests carried out on board FGS Frankfurt am Main in Helsinki on Monday to establish the compatibility of the German Navy combat support ship and the Finnish Navy's Jurmo class landing craft were a success.

Finnish Defence Forces paper Ruotuväki had reported on its website the day before that Germany was considering buying Jurmos.

Commander Aimo Jokela said the tests consisted of lifting a Jurmo onto the deck of FGS Frankfurt am Main to see how it would fit.

"A Jurmo was hoisted with a crane from the sea onto the deck of the combat support vessel and then lowered back into the water. There were no problems," Cdr Jokela said.

im not sure if this is the right choice for germany...
this boat can only carry some 3 tons of weight!!!(or 22 full equipped soldiers)

i like the fact that it can make up to 37 knots... but i think we need something like the american LCACs that can transport vehicles like the Puma IFV for example and bigger loads...

my suggestion would be the russian Zubr/Pomornik hoover craft(it can load 3 tanks and still makes some 40 knots!) or american LCAC in combination with a TAWARA class aircraft carrier...

anyway i never understood why germany discharged the 'Volksmarine' s landing crafts...

Germany is just learning and building up its Naval infantry(MSK), for a start those boats are great (IMO)
With six of those boats you can Land a company of Marine Infantry with one run...

Germanys first "carrier" will look sth. like this.

well... the cb 90 is faster, has a higher payload and can also be used as missile-carrier... thats not a bad deal in my eyes

i think such a chopper-carrier would be just the right thing!
thx for the link:)

but i dont think that will fit into the budget... at least not the next few years...

the budget already is extremely stressed by many projects..(sachsen class, ef2000, taurus etc.)

That was my first thought also, I loved how those CB90 hunted down the Greenpeace hippis at Heiligendamm.
But it seems those boats have some problems(Wiki article):

"Accidents involving CB90s

On the night of October 23, 2006, a CB90 sank off of Hamnudden, east of Utö in the Stockholm archipelago. The boat was travelling at 11 knots due to the bad weather when it suddenly began to take on water from the bow. It then sank in less than ten minutes. All of the crew of 16 were quickly picked up by other ships that were nearby. No one was physically injured, but the crew suffered from shock and hypothermia when picked up.

On June 13, 2004, several Strb 90 H from the Swedish Navy's first amphibious regiment were sailing at high speed in convoy formation when one of them abruptly reduced speed (allegedly so its wake would not upset a smaller sailboat). The boat immediately behind it failed to react and rammed it. Two soldiers who were abovedeck at the time of the accident were thrown in the water; one was killed instantly, and the other sustained severe injuries from which he died later the same day.

In mid-1999, one CB90 (No. 820) belonging to the 2nd Coastal Artillery Regiment (KA2) of the Swedish Navy crashed into a concrete pier at approximately 30 knots. There were eight soldiers on board; seven of these men sustained more or less severe injuries, including fractures, while one soldier who remained physically unhurt was standing in the machine gun ring-mount on mid-deck."

So i would prefer the Jurmo...

Maybe after 2008 the project for a German LPH will start.
I'm quite sure we will see a German LPH in the nearer future...
The economy is running very good in these days and the the Tax income is already at a new all time high. The military budget for 2007 is around 1 Bil. Euro higher than 2006 and it will raise further if the economy keeps booming like this.
