Sukhoi unveils 'supercruising' Su-35-1 multi-role fighter

Cleaner layout and improved propulsion system thought to offer supercruise performance

Sukhoi expects to conduct the first flight of its all-new Su-35-1 single-seat multirole fighter within the near future, having unveiled the KnAAPO-built design at August's Moscow air show.

Launched in 2003, the Su-35-1 lacks the integral triplane configuration employed by India's Su-30MKIs, and its cleaner layout and improved propulsion system are believed to offer supercruise performance.

The new fighter has a lighter airframe than the legacy Su-27, due to its extensive use of aluminium, titanium and composite structures.

It also has a fully digital flight-control system incorporating engine and thrust vectoring control.

The Su-35-1 can carry over 2t more fuel than the Su-27 and has a ferry range of 4.500km (2,430nm) with external fuel tanks. Airframe life is quoted as 6,000 flight hours or 30 years, and Sukhoi general director Mikhail Pogosyan says the aircraft will be available for export delivery from 2010.

The Russian air force is expected to order several of the aircraft, which will also be promoted to nations such as China.

The aircraft was displayed with new weapons including NPO Machinostoyenia Yakhont and BrahMos PJ-11 supersonic missiles. The type is also believed to be equipped with a new air-to-air missile with a range of up to 200km.

The Su-35-1 is powered by two NPO Saturn Item 117S engines, developed from the Su-27's AL-31F under a joint project with Ufa MPO.

The new design uses a fully digital control system, swivel nozzle, enlarged fan and engine inlet for higher airflow, a redesigned turbine with improved cooling and has a design life of 4,000 flight hours.

The aircraft is also equipped with a Tikhomirov NIIP Irbis radar with an electronically scanned passive array antenna. A further development of the Su-30MKI's N-011M Bars sensor, with a more powerful transmitter and higher-speed processing, the design has a claimed detection range of more than 300km against airborne threats.

Here is some detailed news:

The Su-35 – A Step Away from the Fifth Generation

Perhaps the most anticipated new thing of the recently passed MAKS-2007 aerospace salon outside Moscow was the Su-35 fighter. As had been planned, it was demonstrated in the static display, but as early as the very near future, after completion of a ground workout, it is supposed to make first flight. Right now another two experimental Su-35 are being assembled at the Komsomol’sk-on-Amur aviation production association, which are supposed to join the flight test program by the end of 2007. According to an announcement of the Sukhoy aviation company’s general director, Mikhail Pogosyan, there is great demand abroad for the new Russian aircraft. Negotiations are already underway with a number of countries about possible deliveries of the fighter.

The designation Su-35 itself has been well know for a rather long time. An Su-27M has been demonstrated for almost 15 years at different air salons with such a designator. During its further improvement, the concept of a major upgrade of the Su-27 family of fighters arose, for which the Su-35 name was retained. Just what is new in it?

An important difference from the predecessors was the use of AL-31FP engines on the Su-35. In the design plan, this engine is a further development of the series-built AL-31F using fifth generation technology. Equipping the engine with a rotating nozzle together with the capability of automatic differential thrust changes of the two engines, of the so-called differential thrust control ((UPRAVLENIE RAZNOTYAGOM)), provides control of the airplane in all planes. Including at ultra-low and near-zero flight speeds. Conventional aerodynamic control apparatus loses its effectiveness in such conditions. If required, the thrust vectoring control system can be fully disconnected by locking ((S FIKSATSIEY)) of the nozzles in a neutral position.

A new radar with a phased antenna array (FAR) is the basis of the Su-35 weapons control system. It possesses unique characteristics for range of detection and number of targets tracked. The system is a further development of the “Bars” ((panther)) radar. The FAR provides electronic beam scanning, but in azimuth and in elevation. An additional mechanical swivel ((DOVOROT)) of the antenna in azimuth by means of a gyroactuator ((GIROPRIVOD)) has been realized for increasing field of view in the horizontal plane. In the air-to-air mode, the radar can detect head-on at ranges of 350 – 400 kilometers and track (while maintaining an uninterrupted field of view) up to 30 targets and also fire at 8 of them. “Ultra-small” targets with an effective reflective surface (on the order of a hundredth of a square meter) are detected at a range of 90 kilometers. These are unique indicators for modern aircraft radars.

The additional Su-35 weapons control capabilities provide a newly developed optical radar ((OPTIKO-LOKATSIONNAYA STANTSIYA)) which combines a heat-seeker, laser range-finder and target designator, and a television channel.

The Su-35 armament, besides the already well-known medium rang air-to-air missiles with active and semi-active radar and heat-seeking guidance heads, and also dog-fighting missiles (totaling 34), is 5 new long-range missiles. The range of air-to-surface guided weapons includes medium and long-range 25 anti-shipping and anti-radar missiles. Included are the “Klab” system and also the “Yakhont” ((ruby)) long-range heavy missile.

The Su-35 is practically indistinguishable from today’s Su-30MK on the part of aircraft guided bombs with television, laser and satellite guidance. But, in principle, even new models can be used on it. The effectiveness of the use of aircraft guided bombs is guaranteed by a laser and television site system. It is located in a suspended optical electronic pod. The system provides detection, tracking, determination of range and laser illumination of ground targets.

The Su-35’s combat payload weight is 8,000 kilograms. It is placed on 12 suspension points. Equipped with vectored thrust engines and an improved avionics complex, the Su-35 significantly exceeds its Su-27M forbear in capabilities. In contrast to the Su-35 being offered now in the worldwide market, it is more adapted for maneuverable combat, including owing to its lower weight.

“We are planning to begin export deliveries of the Su-35 from 2010,” Mikhail Pogosyan declared. The new fighter has been called upon to occupy a place between the different variants of the present Su-30MK and future fifth generation aircraft. The Su-35 is a generation “4++” airplane, in which a large number of fifth generation technologies have been used, they believe at the Sukhoy company. These new technologies will guarantee the Su-35 in the 2009 – 2015 period incontestable advantages in the world aircraft market in comparison with other fourth generation multirole fighters.

AL-31FP?

What is with Saturn AL-41 ? It is only Russian engine in 40.000 pound trust class.

"The NPO Saturn AL-41F is a Russian turbofan engine, designed for supercruise flight. Originally developed for the Mikoyan Project 1.44, the engine was built around the geometry of the AL-31F, making it compatible with existing airframes, including the Sukhoi Su-27 series. The engine is reported to have recently entered low rate initial production for use in the Su-34 Fullback. Specifications are not disclosed yet, but it is described by most sources as being in the 40.000 lbf class, 10:1 thrust to weight ratio."

They dont say nothing about spercruise speed. How fast is it? What payload can Su-35 carry and still going over 1M without afterburners?

actually AL-31 FP was used on Su-37 board 711, on Su-35 was decided to use 117C engine or AL-31F series 42.
