By this article, it appears that Russia is making great strides in the
field of

Night vision technology that is so important for the effectivenes
of a great variety of weapons systems. ( i changed the order of the article to better spot the Night vision part) :)

The real sensation of the salon, alas, which was evaluated only by specialists, were the stands of the Geofizika-NV enterprise. Night vision systems are the real calamity of our armed forces. The paradox is that the quality of domestic “night eyes” exceeds the worldwide level!

The first generation of infrared instruments, which are equipped with image converters (EhOP) and which increase illumination by 100 times, appeared at the end of the 1930s. And the second generation, which increased illumination of the image by 5,000 times, appeared only in the 1970s. Even the whole world stopped at this.

And only in the 1980s did the American succeed in the creation of a third generation EhOP which increased illumination by 50,000 times. They have monopolized the manufacture of the best night vision instruments. The USSR itself got stuck at the first and second generation level.

In 1993, a team of enthusiastic scientists under the leadership of Viktor Soldatenkov, was organized into that same Geofizika-NV. And as early as 1997, our third generation EhOP were shown at the Russian MAKS and the French Le Bourget.

And at MAKS-2007, fourth generation night vision instruments were being demonstrated which increase illumination by 500,000 times! And it was announced that work is beginning on the creation of fifth generation systems. The criteria for their appraisal will no longer be illumination, but a whole number of other characteristics which allow seeing in the dead of night as if it were day. We have gone past the United States in the most high technology direction for sure. A number of Western European countries already have come to Russia with an offer to sell the licenses for the production of the third (only) generation EhOPs.

The developers of domestic airplanes and helicopters at the last MAKS finally decided to adapt their aircraft for fourth generation night vision. Right now they have been adapted for second, and not even everywhere. Even the widely advertised Mi-28N “Night Hunter” with last century’s infrared apparatus cannot hunt simply physically in darkness.

Miracles in Turns

The salon at Zhukovskiy in high technologies

There were only a few real new things at MAKS-2007. But then what kind! N.E. Zhukovskiy Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute specialists showed a new helicopter tail rotor.

Its feature is that it rules out stalling, providing a rotary-winged aircraft very high stability in the presence wind gusts, high temperature and rarefaction. It would seem, you will think, a tail rotor. Meanwhile, the quantity of Mi-24 and Mi-8 accidents in Chechnya which are connected with stalling, was comparable with the losses from the militants’ firing. It must be added that there aren’t even such props in the United State with such a profile that has been created at Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute.

Domestic aircraft builders had thought about the airliner of the future – the MS-21, which is supposed to surpass all the world’s counterparts. As the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute director, Vladimir Kargopol’tsev, declared, the successful resolution of extremely an ambitious problem is possible. But only in the case where representatives of aviation science will participate in the definition of the configuration of the 21st century passenger aircraft.

The Tactical Missile Armament corporation was distinguished by the demonstration all at once of three of the newest missiles for different purposes: the Kh-31AD, the Kh-58UShKB and the Kh-38M.

The Kh-31AD is an anti-shipping missile which is able to destroy even an aircraft carrier, easily penetrating its air defenses.

The second missile is a major upgrade of the Kh-58, which recently received sensational notoriety in connection with Georgia’s assertion that it had fallen on its territory in particular. The new Kh-58UShKB was made in anticipation that it can be deployed not only on an external rack, but also within the body of fifth generation carrier airplanes.

The Kh-38M is an overall qualitatively new step in the unification of aircraft weapons systems. As the general director of the corporation, Boris Obnosov, said, the Kh-38M is able to resolve a large number of combat missions and is intended for replacement of a significant part of different types of missiles in the inventory today.
