My question is to find the real cost of the fighter - i read somewhere that the fighter costs $80 million to purchase. Does any one know the cost of the fighter? second : if it is 80 million and saudi is paying 20 billion for 72 fighters, according to a bbc report today, that means the fighther is being sold at a price of $ 277 millioin each!!! that is a net profit of 197 million per plane!!! does make sense at all??!!

Well, maybe they are also buying the technicians required to operate them, and the munitions involved? Still, I dont know if that makes up the +197 million.

I wonder what they are even going to do with these???

NOTHING.They will sit and bake in the heat.

I hate Saudi regime with a passion. They love to give money to Europeans and Americans while people in the Middle East starve.

There is two prices of aircraft. Look Su-30 job for Indonesia. They paid one Su-30 70million $. But aircraft price is 30 to 40 million $ depending of equipment and model. Why then Indonesia paid so much?
Because they will get spare parts (probable even couple of engines and engines are expensive) also training for maintain and for flight, tools and machines need to maintain and train etc...
So when one country buy new type of aircraft it is much more expensive then just price of jet. Well 277million $ for Typhoon is overkill but we dont know what equipment and other stuff is inside of this 277 million?

saudi should spend money in other ways helping poorer muslim countries instead of buying weapons when it has no enemies and under U.S protection.

Saudi Arabia signed a £4.43 Billion (USD 8.86 Billion) contract for 72 Eurofighter Typhoons on September 11th, 2007. The deal is according to the plans outlined in the 2005 agreement between the two governments, part of a new defence cooperation programme known as Project Salam, or al-Salam, meaning “peace”.

The initial contract will be followed by a further order for armaments and weapons systems, as well as contracts regarding maintenance, training and support for the aircraft. The total value is estimated to be £20 billion over the lifetime of the aircraft.

The first 24 Typhoons are planned to be build at BAE’s factory at Warton, Lancashire, and the remaining jets are likely to be assembled in Saudi Arabia. BAE already employs 4,600 people in the kingdom, but negotiations on how much more the company will invest to build and support the Typhoons are yet to be finalised.

Al-Salam follows the al-Yamamah contract for Tornados, which has been worth more than £43 billion to BAE since it was signed in 1984

This is crazy...if it is indeed 20 Billion POUNDS that translates into $ 40 billion, that is still a staggering $555 million per aircraft for the lifetime of the aircraft...this is completely nuts- regardless of how many spare parts, engines or weapons you get to buy...a case of little brain a lot of money...and a starving unemployed populace...

to put it in persepctive...if i bought a mercedes benz for $40,000 dollars - its expected lifetime is gonna be 5 to 8 years...and i spend $180,488 (i could buy 4.5 more cars at that price) on spare parts, a couple of spare engines and what not, in addition to maintenace over that lifetime, then there is something totally wrong with my thinking and my purchase (either or is highly dubious) .. especially if i never get to use it much....

It might not be so bad if the Saudis ever get pissed at Israel. With that kind of firepower IAF would burn.

israle and saudis airforce are about equal especial with the saudis getting the eurofighters which are much better than f-16s however saudis dont have any intent to war with israel believe me the usa and israle know this otherwise they wouldnt have given them this high tech stuff. neither is israle stupid to attack saudi they will be up against patriot air defence system aster air defence f-15 eagels eurofighters and other secret stuff. saudi also has a nuclear cover with pakistan pakistan has missile silos in the saudi desert with nukes if required . i know this for a fact but neither side will admit this for obvious reasons.
