Iran's Health Minister has announced at the EMRO preparatory meeting that the country ranks fourth in the world, in kidney transplants.
More than 2000 transplants are annually performed in Iran. Some 42 liver transplants have been performed in the country since the approval of the cerebral death's law, 7 years ago, said Dr Kamran Baqeri-Lankarani.

The Dean of Tajikistan's University of Medical Sciences requested closer cooperation with Iran in order to benefit from its valuable experiences in liver and kidney transplants as well as the drug industry.

Ministerial Preparatory Meeting for the 2008 Global Ministerial Forum on Research for Health is held from Nov. 17 to 19 2007 in Tehran. This year's meeting aims to develop and finalize a background document that would define and advocate health research in participating countries.

The meeting was organized by Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, the World Health Organization HQ / EMRO, the Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), the Secretariat for 2008 Bamako Global Ministerial Forum on Research for Health and the World Bank.

Heh, I guess I wasnt the first one with certain kind of thoughts.. but the thing that came to my mind, do they drink that much? Heh.

On a serious note: raw numbers are not that significant, but what is the succes rate?

I have seen similar documentary before.. it is sad, but this is really a double edged sword. Many volunteers give their kidney to save other people (at least up here), so I am not sure what is fundamentally wrong with selling.. though there are many ethical questions and practical problems.. I do not have strong opinion on this.
