Czechs, US Pursue Talks on Anti-missile Shield
11/12/2007

The Czech Republic and the United States on Tuesday opened a fourth round of talks on an anti-missile shield to be sited in the central European country, the defense ministry said.

The talks are a normal follow-up of discussions on US plans to install a powerful targeting radar in the Czech Republic and 10 interceptor missiles in Poland by 2012, said ministry spokesman Andrej Cirtek. They started in May and the fourth round is to continue until Thursday.

"These are complicated things and the negotiations may last until February," Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg said in an interview.
"We must sign four agreements and we will then submit two of them to the parliament which will either approve them or not."

In spite of public opposition in the Czech Republic to the project designed to counter a threat from so-called "rogue" states.

A US offer to open the site for Russian observers to ease
Moscow's opposition has been met with resistance by the Czech side which does not want a permanent Russian military presence in the country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has compared the idea of setting up a missile system in such close proximity to Russia to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, when the Soviet Union began deploying nuclear-capable missiles in Cuba.
