TEHRAN -- In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki on Saturday, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Chalabi said that Iran has played a constructive and positive role in the process of the establishment of the new Iraqi government.
“Relations with Iran are a priority of Iraq’s foreign policy, and we are interested in maintaining our friendly ties with Iran and enhancing them,” he added.
For his part, Mottaki said that Tehran wants the people of Iraq to start running their own country as quickly as possible.
The Iranian foreign minister also noted that the result of the recent referendum shows that the Iraqi nation desires to determine their own destiny and expressed hope that this process would be enhanced with the collaboration of all regional states.
“The United States has no other option than accepting the will of the Iraqi people, and it should withdraw its troops from Iraq,” Mottaki observed.
He went on to say that maintaining Iraq’s territorial integrity is in Iran’s best interests.
“We are interested in developing good relations in various spheres with Iraq,” Mottaki added.
