Several dozen Syrians held a sit-in near a United Nations office here Saturday, urging the international community to help release 17 of the country's citizens long held prisoner by Israel.

Some 75 protesters held candles and pictures of the prisoners, who were residents of the Golan Heights, which was occupied by Israel in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Israel arrested the 17 Syrians at different points after the war, charging them with resisting occupation. Several have been in Israeli prisons for more than 20 years.

Saturday's protest took place outside the United Nations Development Program office in Damascus, and the participants handed a UNDP representative a letter calling on the international community to ''intervene to stop violence against these prisoners and free them immediately.''

Earlier this month, Syria's Foreign Ministry sent letters to the U.N. human rights body urging the organization to push Israel to provide the prisoners with necessary medical care.

Abdul-Kareem Rihawi, head of a Syrian human rights organization, said the sit-in was meant to show ''solidarity'' with the prisoners.

Prisoners since 1967 .. its pretty long . Where does Israel arrested them inside Israel or in Golan heights ? Why UN doesnt issue any resolutions now ?
And why USA and EU not ask Israel to release them ?

Too much hypocrisy .

Syria UN League Calls for Freeing Syrian Prisoners from Israeli Jails

Dec 24, 2008

Damascus, (SANA)-The Syrian UN League called on the international organization and its main agencies to immediately intervene to free all the Syrian prisoners and detainees from the Israeli jails.

The League, in a letter addressed to the UN Secretary General, said that some of the Syrian prisoners and detainees have been imprisoned by Israeli for more than two decades.

The letter pointed out to the humanitarian tragedy and sufferings being faced by the prisoners, especially Bishr Suleiman al-Maqt, Sidki Suleiman al-Maqt and Assem Mahmoud al-Wili whose lives are threatened as a result of Israeli hostile practices against them.

It stressed that such practices violate the minimum humanitarian rules stated by the international treaties and laws.

I couldn't care less.
There is still a number of bodies of fallen Israeli soldiers held by Syria, and they're not willing to trade those.

So I say, let those Syrian prisoners rot in jail.

Few. For both.
What does it matter? This is a principle. They're not willing to trade, they'll rot in jail. There is no price list. Our bodies are not cold meat in the market.

Hamas: Israel frees Syrian prisoners under Shalit's tape deal
2009-10-22 10:36:10 GMT2009-10-22 18:36:10 (Beijing Time) Xinhua English

GAZA, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The two Syrian prisoners Israel freed last week were part of a deal between the Jewish state and Palestinian fighters, an official of the Palestinian Islamic Hamas movement said on Thursday.

"The release of the Syrian prisoners came in the context of captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit," said Osama al-Muzini, a Hamas official based in the Gaza Strip.

In September, Israel freed 20 Palestinian female prisoners after Hamas handed out a video tape showing Shalit's status in his Gaza captivity. The film was intended to move forward indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel to exchange prisoners.

On Oct. 16, Israel unexpectedly freed two Syrian prisoners, Bisher Maqt and Assem Walli, after holding them 25 years in custody.

Al-Muzini refused to reveal the latest news regarding his movement's negotiations with Israel that Egypt and Germany sponsor. He only said that "the talks are going on and very active."

Hamas wants Israel to free at least 1,000 Arab and Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Shalit who was captured by Gaza militants in a cross-border raid near Gaza in 2006.

Israel was not informed whether its soldiers were alive or dead.

There is no price list. We will not free Syrian prisoners when Syria refuses to give back Israeli bodies.

Al Maqt, A Detainee Behind Bars Since 24 Years
Tuesday December 08, 2009 11:37 by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC & Agencies

Former detainee, specialist in Detainees’ Affairs, Abdul-Nasser Farawna, stated that detainee Sidqi Al Maqt, from the Golan heights, is hoping a prisoner-swap deal would free him after 25 years in captivity and oppression in Israeli prisons.

Farawna added that Al Maqt, the Arab Syrian detainee, and all detainees who spent many years in Israeli prisons, are looking forwards to be released despite the Israeli preconditions.

He said that what increases the hope of Al Maqt that he would be released is the steadfastness of the Palestinian factions, holding the Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, and their demand that Israel must release all detainees mentioned in their list.

This includes Arabs and Palestinians detainees who spent many years behind bars and those sentenced to high terms. The name of Al Maqt was among the names Hamas demands to be freed.

Farawna called on the fighters holding Shalit captive to remain steadfast on including the names of Arab detainees as part of any prisoner-swap deal, so that Al Maqt can return home and enjoy freedom after a quarter of a century in Israeli prisons.

“The issue of the detainees is an issue of equality, it is not based on political affiliation, or country of origin”, Farawna said, “This issue is not based on geographical location, religion or sect”.

Al Maqt, 42, is the brother of Bihir A Maqt who was released last October after spending 25 years in Israeli prisons.

He was born in Majdal Shams, in the Golan Heights, and is considered one of the founders of the Secret Resistance Movement in the Golan Heights in the early eighties. He was arrested on August 23, 1985, and was sentenced to 27 years.
