FORT WORTH, Texas , July 20, 2005 --

Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] received a long-lead contract, valued at approximately $67.7 million, from the U.S. Air Force to begin development of a major systems upgrade of Turkish Air Force F-16 aircraft. The total contract is valued at approximately $800 million and is expected to be issued in mid-2006.

small Info: Turkey has provided 18 F-16s to the allied campaign against Serbia - 11 stationed at the NATO base at Aviano, Italy, and the other seven at home. All of the planes were equipped with laser-guided bombs using the LANTIRN night-vision system. Turkish F-16s have been bombing targets in Yugoslavia, sharply increasing their involvement in the air war. Turkish jets previously had been patrolling Balkan airspace, providing protection for attacking planes. During this campaign, Turkish F-16s have set a world CAP record by patrolling for 9 hours and 22 minutes above the Balkan theatre. Normal CAP missions last between 3 and 4 hours.

$1.1B to Upgrade Turkish F-16 fleet

The Turkish and US governments signed a letter of offer and acceptance (LOA) on April 26 for the $1.1-billion modernization of 117 Turkish Air Force F-16s to a common avionics configuration. The upgrade will create a common avionics configuration for the service's fleet of F-16 Block 40 and 50 aircraft. More than 200 F-16 aircraft make up the backbone of Turkey's current fighter fleet.

Systems to be integrated on Turkey's upgraded F-16s include:

* The AN/APG-69(V)9 radar that is currently being installed on new F-16 Advanced Block 50/52 aircraft
* Color cockpit displays
* The Modular Mission Computer and new avionics processors
* The Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS)
* The Link 16 datalink
* New identification-friend-or-foe (IFF) transponders
* AN/AVS-9 night-vision goggles
* Upgraded navigation systems; and
* BAE Systems' AN/ALQ-178(V)5+ electronic-warfare (EW) system, mounted internally, with radar-warning and jamming capabilities for aircraft self-protection

The aircraft will also be modified to accept new missile systems of unspecified types; some potential candidates include the AIM-9X Sidewinder, AIM-120 AMRAAM, and MBDA Meteor.

The deal will be conducted under the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, with Lockheed Martin in Ft. Worth, TX serving as principle contractor, although the actual modification of the aircraft will be performed by TUSAS Aerospace Industries in Ankara, Turkey. TUSAS is currently the focus of a Turkish defense industry consolidation plan sponsored by the Turkish government.

The thing is, Russia could never become an arms supplier to Turkey as the two have a history of animosity between each other. On the other hand, the Turks don't trust the French (who does?) & the Euro Consortium only fares marginally better. Thus, the only country Turkey can rely on for combat aircraft is the USA, who are more than happy to give them assembly rights. With 150 F-35A 'Lightning II' the Turkish AF may have a potent mix with its F-16C/D Block 52+ (as all aircraft will be brought up to this standard) but it lacks diversity & for a large force this is problematic. The Sino-Pakistani FC-1 may be under consideration as an F-5 replacement, but even then many would see it as a false upgrade (realistically speaking it is) & its RD-93 engine would be contraversial for being Russian.

One should ask how safe it is to rely solely on American combat aircraft, particularly when Turkey faces a range of threats that cannot simply be dealt with by many aircraft. For instance, Greece looks set to acquire the EADS Typhoon & the present Turkish fleet cannot handle the Typhoon, where the F-35A 'Lightning II' is somewhat sluggish at the A2A role -furthermore, the Typhoon will probably get first-see/first-shot against the JSF & while it may be a better strike aircraft (thanks to stealth) it's barely complete.

I think that Turkey should have purchased a number of F-15s to replace the F-4D/E in service. When you stop to consider that 60 F-15E/F-type aircraft are more effective than the entire F-4D/E fleet combined, & share a common engine with the F-16C/D in Turkish service (even better, they have the same weapons systems) & a much more balanced fleet. The RF-4E may be useful (Turkey has 40+ of them).

BVR-combat depends on speed/acceleration as well as missile performance. The JSF is supposed to have a high degree of stealth to escape detection from the Typhoon's radar, even though it isn't (on paper) a superior platform for launching a BVR-AAM. However, is not likely that the JSF will go undetected by the Typhoon due to the CAPTOR's rapid-scanning & other characteristics designed to go around stealth aircraft. Keep in mind the Typhoon with a high degree of RCS isn't also as easy to detect.

In raw performance, the Typhoon beats the JSF anyday. The Typhoon (with its EJ-200 engines) can supercruise to Mach 1.3 with a standard A2A load, & the EJ-200 isn't even at full capacity (a 15% growth in engine thrust should be ensured before the end of the decade) with a 30% increase after 2015. As such, the super-cruise capacity & payload of the Typhoon will enable it to loitier at higher speeds & cover greater ranges for longer.

On the other hand, the JSF can't supercruise & is designed to maximise its forward stealth. The AN/APG-81 (still not fully deployable) is an AESA, where the CAPTOR is still a PD type radar. The ASMAR should be around before 2010 (in prototype form) & is a true AESA type radar with the METEOR long-range AAMs to enter service with them.

From a Turkish standpoint it doesn't really matter, as the JSF would be used for strike (where it excels over the Typhoon) & the likihood of enemy aircraft detecting it would be minimal. Only real problem is, Turkey wouldn't be allowed to have nor can it afford the F-22A, & the F-15E/F airframe wouldn't be as useful to acquire as (say) it was several years ago. I'd say that Turkey could look at the F-15R (R for Rebuild) based on retired F-15A/B airframes (the F-15A/B has a lifespan of 16,000 hours) as an F-4E 'Terminator' replacement but again, this would be costly & not worth any benefits gained.

I've done some research:
This spectacular maneuver was perfomed by a Turkish jandarmerie pilot just after these blackhawks came into inventory in the beginning of the 90's. Apparently this move is strictly forbidden, but the heli didn't experience any problem during or after the loop :).

Most of the parts like block 50+ etc. are coming from the Lockeed Martin Corporation, but Turkey is started to build the F-16's under the licence of them
soon its the F-35's Turn to build. They should give us some F-22 as bonus , we are their first class customers, they are making profit thanks to us.

For the THK, if a hostile force ingresses into Turkish airspace, the primary decisionmakers are the Turks themselves. Washinton and Brussels are too far away to make a meaningful response in regards to an air interception.

HARM is a weapon for suppressing and killing enemy air defenses. Were a nation bordering Turkey trying to use its SAMs to hit THK assets or civil air traffic... Then the HARMs could be employed to eliminate the threat. Again, a decision that would be made by the forces of the Turkish Republic.

As for bombing Kurdish enclaves elswhere, I would turn a blind eye and let the THK do the job. If the Kurds want to play war... Well, there is a risk in doing so and by now they should know better. No sympathy from me.

not exactly Egypt has 190/195 F16 currently while Turkey should have 210/215...Also Egyptian ones looks very poor on dynasty,avionics and equipment.No need to worry i heard you gonna prepare great modernization project for EAFs F16A/Bs.right?

Well, its difficult to know the exact quantity since different sources vary in the information but the more reliable one is F-16.net and according to their listing, the EAF has 202 active F-16's out of the 220 delivered. 18 of them written off probably because of crashes. Not sure how updated that is. You can't get any info from Egyptian sources.

mate its clear we have 219 pieces .. but Turkey is building 30 + which 15's are finished under Peace Onyx II project ...so 219 + 15 we can count now = 233 ... the other half is not finished yet ..

Egypt should think about Russian jets..
They have a powerfull airforce + Russian jets that would be a super duo ..

Turkey received 240 F16 totally.25 of them lost in mishaps/accidents and 2-3 of them out of service due to the CCIP modernization project.We have at least 212-215 F16 currently.Also we ordered more 30 F16.They will be built by 2010-2011.

Egypt
Egypt received totally 220 F16.18 of them lost in mishaps/accidents and 7 F16A/B grounded due to the avionic problem.Currently EAF should have 195 F16 either.

Also not to forget the most importnant thing rather then numbers:

Turkey's F-16's are more advanced then Egypt F-16's.

Also Turkey has license of building F-16's. :)

1-no it is imposible that we have 219 F16.

2-Our last orders will be built by 2010-2011 maybe 2012.not now.And they are under Peacle Onyx IV program not II.

Actually we had more F-16's but some of them were out of service... accidents etc.
but the information on wikipedia is not clear i think...

After 2013 .. Turkey is going to manufacture/produce F-35A's under licence
