I have been reading a lot about this battle from many online sources such as wiki ect.. however I'm not sure how accurate or trustworthy these sources are. since there are many Shiai in this forum I would like to hear or read an accurate unbiased account of the Battle of Karbala. Are there any good books or articles about the lead up and the battle itself?

Well here's what a Sunni brother from Egypte wrote, telling me his side of the story about the battle of Karbala, his username is EAF:

when the unjusts liars killed IMMAM ALI
the nation was shocked and the nation realized that all of these accidents are made by hands of conspirators wants to destroy the nation and push the muslims to fight themselves and breakup the muslims into groups and they understod that MOAWIYAH was innocent and all what happened was traps

so they killed those who killed IMMAM ALI and they united under one command and they agreed to choose MOAWIYAH as a caliphat to end this mess and finish the fitna for ever



but those who planned for the fitna didn't gave up yet and they kept trying
and the chance came to them when MOAWIYAH died and there were some objections by IMMAM HUSSAIN on the next caliphat

أنه كان قد أبى من البيعة ليزيد حين بايع له أبوه رابع أربعة عبد الله بن عمر، وعبد الله بن الزبير، وعبد الرحمن بن أبي بكر.

while the IMMAM HUSSAIN wasn't against the new caliphat it was just some objections and some inquiries

because this new caliphat was the 4th of 4 men the previous caliphat suggested before his death

ومختصر ذلك أن يزيد لما بُويع له بعد موت أبيه، وكان أبوه بايع له الناس، فأرسل يزيد إلى عامله بالمدينة: الوليد بن عتبة يأخذ له البيعة، فأرسل إلى الحسين، وعبد الله بن الزبير، فأتياه ليلاً، وقالا له: مثلنا لا يبايع سراً، بل على رؤوس الأشهاد، ثم رجعا، وخرجا من ليلتهما في بقية من رجب، فقدم الحسين مكة وأقام بها، وخرج منها يوم التروية إلى الكوفة،

and then "AL-YAZID ibn MOAWIYAH" sent to the governor of medina "AL-WALID ibn OTBAH" asking him to ask the medina people to recogniz him as caliph

then the governor of medina sent to IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN and ABD ALLAH ibn AL-ZOBAIER then the came to him at night and told him people like us don't pay homage in privately but we paye homage and recognize the caliphat in public and in the attendance of people and they back bt in the same night they went to mecca. and then he movd to al-kuffa "iraq" in the day of "al-tarwiyah"


بعد موت معاوية بن ابى سفيان ومبايعة اليزيد بن معاوية خليفة للمسلمين
بلغ أهل العراق أن الحسين لم يبايع يزيد بن معاوية وذلك سنة 60هـ

after the death of "MOAWIYAH ibn ABI SOUFIAN" the caliphat in year 60H
the iraqi people heared news that
IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN didn't recognized AL-YAZID ibn MOAWIYA as caliph yet
then
they started to send IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN letters and messages telling him that they don't want "AL-YAZID ibn MOAWIYAH" to be the caliphat as they didn't wanted "MAWIYAH ibn ABI-SOUFIAN" nor "OTHMAN ibn AFFAN" nor "OMAR ibn AL-KHATTAB" nor "ABU BAKR" to be the caliphat before

عند ذلك أرسل الحسين ابن عمه مسلم بن عقيل ليتقصى الأمور ويتعرف على حقيقة البيعة وجليتها، فلما وصل مسلم إلى الكوفة تيقن أن الناس يريدون الحسين ، فبايعه الناس على بيعة الحسين وذلك في دار هانئ بن عروة

then IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN sent his cousin "MOSLEM ibn OKAIL" to iraq to understand what is gong on up there and know the truth of the people and when "MOSLEM ibn OKAIL" arrived al-kuffa he knew that the people wants AL-HUSSAIN and they recognized him as the caliphat and that was in "HANI ibn ORWAH" house

ولما بلغ الأمر يزيد بن معاوية في الشام أرسل إلى عبيد الله بن زياد والي البصرة ليعالج هذه القضية ، ويمنع أهل الكوفة من الخروج عليه مع الحسين ولم يأمره بقتل الحسين ، فدخل عبيد الله بن زياد إلى الكوفة ، وأخذ يتحرى الأمر ويسأل حتى علم أن دار هانئ بن عروة هي مقر مسلم بن عقيل وفيها تتم المبايعة .

and when "AL-YAZID ibn MOAWIYAH" knew about this he sent to "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" the governor of al-basra to deal with this matter and to prevent al-kuffa people from mutiny and disobedience against him and join IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN and he ordered him not to hurt IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN then "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" went to kuffa and started get sure of the matter and he knew that "HANI ibn ORWAH" house is the center of "MOSLEM ibn OKAIL" and its the place of recognizing the IMMAM as the caliphat

فخرج مسلم بن عقيل على عبيد الله بن زياد وحاصر قصره بأربعة آلاف من مؤيديه ، وذلك في الظهيرة . فقام فيهم عبيد الله بن زياد وخوفهم بجيش الشام ورغبهم ورهبهم فصاروا ينصرفون عنه حتى لم يبق معه إلا ثلاثون رجلاً فقط . وما غابت الشمس إلا ومسلم بن عقيل وحده ليس معه أحد. فقبض عليه وأمر عبيد الله بن زياد بقتله فطلب منه مسلم أن يرسل رسالة إلى الحسين فأذن له عبيد الله ،وهذا نص رسالته : ارجع بأهلك ولا يغرنّك أهل الكوفة فإن أهل الكوفة قد كذبوك وكذبوني وليس لكاذب رأي.
ثم أمر عبيد الله بقتل مسلم بن عقيل وذلك في يوم عرفة

then "MOSLEM ibn OKAIL" secede from "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" the governor and revolted against him and blockaded his castle with 4000 iraqi joined him and that was afternoon

but "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" started talking to those 4000 telling them tht al-sham army is comming and also awakening of their desires and attracting them beside scaring

and hence the people started to leave and only 30 of them remained with "MOSLEM ibn OKAIL"

but after the sunset no one stayed with "MOSLEM ibn OKAIL" and he was standing alone

and now "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" arrested "MOSLEM ibn OKAIL" and ordered to kill him

but "MOSLEM ibn OKAIL" asked "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" for only one demand before his kill

it was to allow him send a message to IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN

and "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" agreed

then "MOSLEM ibn OKAIL" sent IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN a message

وكان مسلم بن عقيل قبل ذلك قد أرسل إلى الحسين أن اقدم ، فخرج الحسين من مكة يوم التروية وحاول منعه كثير من الصحابة ونصحوه بعدم الخروج مثل ابن عباس وابن عمر وابن الزبير وابن عمرو وأخيه محمد بن الحنفية وغيرهم. وهذا ابن عمر يقول للحسين : ( إني محدثك حديثا : إن جبريل أتى النبي فخيره بين الدنيا والآخرة فاختار الآخرة ولم يرد الدنيا ، وإنك بضعة منه ، والله لا يليها أحد منكم أبداً وما صرفها الله عنكم إلا للذي هو خير لكم ، فأبى أن يرجع ، فاعتنقه وبكى وقال : استودعك الله من قتيل) ، وروى سفيان بسند صحيح عن ابن عباس أنه قال للحسين في ذلك : ( لولا أن يزري -يعيبني ويعيرني- بي وبك الناس لشبثت يدي من رأسك، فلم أتركك تذهب ) .وقال عبد الله بن الزبير له : ( أين تذهب؟ إلى قوم قتلوا أباك وطعنوا أخاك؟) وقال عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص : (عجّل الحسين قدره، والله لو أدركته ما تركته يخرج إلا أن يغلبني). (رواه يحيى بن معين بسند صحيح)


but the bad things happened cuz

before this message "MOSLEM ibn OKAIL" had sent a message to IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN to come to al-kuffa
"when the people said that we will support AL-HUSSAIN and before the man knew that they ae liers"

and IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN was already started his move to al-kuffa leaving mecca at the day of "al-tarwiyah" as we mentioned before

while there were many people asked him not to go to al-kuffa
-ABD-ALLAH ibn ABBAS 'IMMAM's cousin'
-ABD-ALLAH ibn OMAR
-ABD-ALLAH ibn AL-ZOBAIER
-ABD-ALLAH ibn AMR
-MOHAMAD ibn AL-HANAFEYAH "IMMAM's brother"
and many others

ABD-ALLAH ibn ABBAS told IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN
> except for the peopls gona derogate from me and you , i was about to stick my hand to your head and never let yo go<
ABD-ALLAH ibn OMAR told IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN
>i will tell you a speech : GBREL came to the prophet mohamad and he asked him to choose between the world and the afterworld and the prophet choose the afterword and didn't wanted th world , and you "hussain" is a part of him "mohamad the prophet" i swear to GOD none of you will never rule it , and GOD keeping you away of it because he is saving the better for you "the family"<
ABD-ALLAH ibn AMR told IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN
>i swear to GOD if i was here while he was leaving i was about never let him ago unless he defeat me<
ABD-ALLAH ibn AL-ZOBAIER told IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN
>where are you going ??? to those people who killed your faher and stabbed your brother ???<

and as we know

its done

IMMAM HUSSAIN already was in his way
and
while he was still in his way he heared about what happened to "MOSLEM ibn OKAIL"
then IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN changed his direction to "al-sham" to meet AL-YAZID ibn MOAWIYA himself

but "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" had already sent his army

some sources say he sent the army under command of
"AMR ibn SAAD" and "SHOMR ibn ZE-ALGOSHEN" and "HOUSIN ibn TAMEEM"

some other resources say the army was sent as
>first he sent "OBAID ALLAH ibn AL-HARETH AL-TAMEMMY" to hold IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN in a small place
>and later he sent "AMR ibn SAAD" with 4000
>and finally "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" came himself with some soldiers then the army became 28000

and this army meet IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN in "KARBALLA" while he was on his way to al-sham


and the accident was told as followig


وجاء الحسين خبر مسلم بن عقيل عن طريق الذي أرسله مسلم ، فانطلق الحسين يسير نحو طريق الشام نحو يزيد، فلقيته الخيول بكربلاء بقيادة عمرو بن سعد وشمر بن ذي الجوشن وحصين بن تميم فنزل يناشدهم الله والإسلام أن يختاروا إحدى ثلاث : أن يسيِّروه إلى أمير المؤمنين (يزيد) فيضع يده في يده (لأنه يعلم أنه لا يحب قتله) أو أن ينصرف من حيث جاء (إلى المدينة) أو يلحق بثغر من ثغور المسلمين حتى يتوفاه الله. (رواه ابن جرير من طريق حسن) . فقالوا: لا، إلا على حكم عبيد الله بن زياد. فلما سمع الحر بن يزيد ذلك (وهو أحد قادة ابن زياد) قال : ألا تقبلوا من هؤلاء ما يعرضون عليكم ؟والله لو سألكم هذا الترك والديلم ما حلَّ لكم أن تردوه. فأبوا إلا على حكم ابن زياد. فصرف الحر وجه فرسه، وانطلق إلى الحسين وأصحابه، فظنوا أنه إنما جاء ليقاتلهم، فلما دنا منهم قلب ترسه وسلّم عليهم، ثم كرّ على أصحاب ابن زياد فقاتلهم، فقتل منهم رجلين ثم قتل رحمة الله عليه (ابن جرير بسند حسن) .

ولا شك أن المعركة كانت غير متكافئة من حيث العدد، فقتل أصحاب الحسين (رضي الله عنه وعنهم) كلهم بين يديه يدافعون عنه حتى بقي وحده وكان كالأسد، ولكنها الكثرة ،وكان كل واحد من جيش الكوفة يتمنىَّ لو غيره كفاه قتل الحسين حتى لا يبتلي بدمه (رضي الله عنه)، حتى قام رجل خبيث يقال له شمر بن ذي الجوشن فرمى الحسين برمحه فأسقطه أرضاً فاجتمعوا عليه وقتلوه شهيداً سعيداً . ويقال أن شمر بن ذي الجوشن هو الذي اجتز رأس الحسين وقيل سنان بن أنس النخعي والله أعلم



when they met


IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN asked them for three things

-let him go to al-sham to meet AL-YAZID ibn MOAWIYA as he wanted
or
-let him back to the medina
or
-let him free go whereever he wants


but they said no
we want to do what "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" wants

but one of them "AL-HAR ibn YAZID"

refused what they said and he told to them
>i swear to GOD if any one of turks or daylams asked you for the same it is forbidden if you don't let him , and this is AL-HUSSAIN himself the prophet family how could you prevent them<

and they refused too and
also replayed him
we will do what "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" wants

then "AL-HAR ibn YAZID" understod that those people aren't seeking justice but they want to hurt IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN and had make their decision to kill IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN


then "AL-HAR ibn YAZID" who was one of "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" commanders changed his side and choosed to fight for IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN

he mounted his horse and went to IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN
at first IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN and people with him thought that he came to fight them but when "AL-HAR ibn YAZID" get closer to them he turned his shield and saluted IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN and his men
and then "AL-HAR ibn YAZID" started to attack "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" and assaulted on them and he killed two of them and then get was killed "رحمة الله عليه" defending IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN

and the battle started

and it wasn't equivalent at all

and after a heavy fighting all of IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN fighters died

but he was like the lion he killed many of them and the people of al-kuffa
"the other army" every one of them hope that some one else kill the IMMAM in order not to be stricken by with the IMMAM blood
untill a malignant malicious man called "SHOMR ibn ZE-ALGOSHEN" killed the IMMAM

and those are the men killed with IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN in karballa


في كربلاء:
من أولاد علي بن أبي طالب : أبو بكر – محمد – عثمان – جعفر – العباس.
من أولاد الحسين : أبو بكر – عمر – عثمان – علي الأكبر – عبد الله.
من أولاد الحسن : أبو بكر – عمر – عبد الله – القاسم.
من أولاد عقيل : جعفر – عبد الله – عبد الرحمن – عبد الله بن مسلم بن عقيل.
من أولاد عبد الله بن جعفر : عون – محمد
وأضف إليهم الحسين ومسلم بن عقيل (رضي الله عنهم أجمعين)

وجاء بعض الفجرة برأسه إلى ابن زياد، وهو يقول:
أوقر ركابي فضة وذهباً إني قتلت الملك المحجبا
قتلت خير الناس أماً وأباً.
فغضب لذلك وقال: إذا علمت أنه كذلك فلِمَ قتلته؟ والله لألحقنك به وضرب عنقه، وقيل إن يزيد هو الذي قتل القاتل،

and som dissolute came with IMMAM's head to "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD"
and was saying i killed the best man on earth in father and mother
then when "OBAID-ALLAH ibn ZEYAD" heared him
he told him
: if you know this about him why you killed him ????
and he killed that killer
and some sources say that AL_YAZID ibn MOAWIYA is the one who killed the IMMAM killer


الجزاء من جنس العمل :
لما قُتل عبيد الله بن زياد على يد الأشتر النخعي ، جيء برأسه. فنصب في المسجد، فإذا حية قد جاءت تخلل حتى دخلت في منخر ابن زياد وخرجت من فمه، ودخلت في فمه وخرجت من منخره ثلاثاً (رواه الترمذي ويعقوب بن سفيان).

those who killed IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN were



إن الحقيقة المفاجئة أننا نجد العديد من كتب الشيعة تقرر وتؤكد أن شيعة الحسين هم الذين قتلوا الحسين . فقد قال السيد محسن الأمين " بايع الحسين عشرون ألفاً من أهل العراق ، غدروا به وخرجوا عليه وبيعته في أعناقهم وقتلوه " { أعيان الشيعة 34:1 }.

وكانو تعساً الحسين يناديهم قبل أن يقتلوه : " ألم تكتبوا إلي أن قد أينعت الثمار ، و أنما تقدم على جند مجندة؟ تباً لكم أيها الجماعة حين على استصرختمونا والهين ، فشحذتم علينا سيفاً كان بأيدينا ، وحششتم ناراً أضرمناها على عدوكم وعدونا ، فأصبحتم ألباً أوليائكم و سحقاً ، و يداً على أعدائكم . استسرعتم إلى بيعتنا كطيرة الذباب ، و تهافتم إلينا كتهافت الفراش ثم نقضتموها سفهاً ، بعداً لطواغيت هذه الأمة " { الاحتجاج للطبرسي }.

ثم ناداهم الحر بن يزيد ، أحد أصحاب الحسين وهو واقف في كربلاء فقال لهم " أدعوتم هذا العبد الصالح ، حتى إذا جاءكم أسلمتموه ، ثم عدوتم عليه لتقتلوه فصار كالأسير في أيديكم ؟ لا سقاكم الله يوم الظمأ "{ الإرشاد للمفيد 234 ، إعلام الورى بأعلام الهدى 242}.

وهنا دعا الحسين على شيعته قائلاً : " اللهم إن متعتهم إلى حين ففرقهم فرقاً ( أي شيعاً وأحزاباً ) واجعلهم طرائق قددا ، و لا ترض الولاة عنهم أبدا ، فإنهم دعونا لينصرونا ، ثم عدوا علينا فقتلونا " { الإرشاد للمفيد 241 ، إعلام الورى للطبرسي 949، كشف الغمة 18:2و38 } .

ويذكر المؤرخ الشيعي اليعقوبي في تاريخه أنه لما دخل علي بن الحسين الكوفة رأى نساءها يبكين ويصرخن فقال : " هؤلاء يبكين علينا فمن قتلنا ؟ " أي من قتلنا غيرهم { تاريخ اليعقوبي 235:1 } .

ولما تنازل الحسن لمعاوية وصالحه ، نادى شيعة الحسين الذين قتلوا الحسين وغدروا به قائلاً :" ياأهل الكوفة : ذهلت نفسي عنكم لثلاث : مقتلكم لأبي ، وسلبكم ثقلي ، وطعنكم في بطني و إني قد بايعت معاوية فاسمعوا و أطيعوا ، فطعنه رجل من بني أسد في فخذه فشقه حتى بلغ العظم { كشف الغمة540، الإرشاد للمفيد190، الفصول المهمة 162، مروج الذهب للمسعودي 431:1} .

فهذه كتب الشيعة بأرقام صفحاتها تبين بجلاء أن الذين زعموا تشييع الحسين ونصرته هم أنفسهم الذين قتلوه ثم ذرفوا عليه الدموع ، وتظاهروا بالبكاء ، ولايزالون يمشون في جنازة من قتلوه إلى يومنا هذا


وقال الإمام الحسين رضي الله عنه في دعائه على شيعته: ( اللهم إن مَتَّعْتَهم إلى حين فَفَرِّقْهم فِرَقاً ، واجعلهم طرائق قِدَداً ، ولا تُرْضِ الوُلاةَ عنهم أبداً، فإنهم دَعَوْنا لِينصرونا، ثم عَدَوا علينا فقتلونا ) الإرشاد للمفيد ص 241.


وقد خاطبهم مرة أخرى ودعا عليهم ، فكان مما قال: ( لكنكم استسرعتم (1) إلى بيعتنا كطيرة الدباء، وتهافَتُّم كتَهَافُت الفرش (2)، ثم نقضتموها، سِفَهاً (3) وبُعداً وسُحقاً لطواغيت هذه الأمة، وبقية الأحزاب، وَنَبَذةِ الكتاب، ثم أنتم هؤلاء تتخاذلون عنا، وتقتلوننا، ألا لعنة الله على الظالمين ) (4) الاحتجاج 2/24.

وهذه النصوص تبين لنا مَن هم قَتَلَةُ الحُسين الحقيقيون، إنهم شيعته أهل الكوفة،

as you see all sources in shi3a and sunni prove that IMMAM ALI and IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN had cursed those who called themselves ALI shi3a coz they were just pretending so but in fact they were liars and killers

and as you see now my brother
it was all a plot
to destroy the nation
and to getting rid of the bravest and best knights in the nation ALI and his son HUSSAIN and the family of the prophet house


those who was calling themselves ALI shi3a are those who killed him
and IMMAM ALI cursed them
and those who was calling themselves HUSSAIN shi3a are those who killed him
and aslo IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN cursed them

it is

at IMMAM ALI time

the people who supported him and who recognized him as the IMMAM and as the caliphat

were the whole nation arab peninsula, egypt , persia , and all other islamic nations at that time

even al-sham itself and moawiyah ibn abi sufian himself they admittde IMMAM ALI is the caliphat and he is amir al-momneen and he is the immam but they asked only for OTHMAN blood
>>>those are the real IMMAM ALI supporters and soldiers


but those who called themselves ALI shi3a are those who splitted from IMMAM ALI army in the battle and those are who fought him in nahrawaen and those are who killed him



same with IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN
all people in the nation admitted that AL-HUSSAIN is the IMMAM and there were no real problems about the caliphat but those are who called themselves ALi shi3a and AL-HUSSAIN shi3a in iraq are those who lied at him and who killed him

iam against this topic called "sects in islam"
this word "shi3a"

coz the fact say that those "shi3a" are who killed IMMAMs and lied at IMMAMs

and the fact also tells

those muslims in the islamic republic of iran and in lebanon and every where
are great muslims they love IMMAM ALI and IMMAM AL-HUSSAIN and the family of the prophet and they are faithful muslims and honest in their love to IMMAMs
they don't deserve to be called shi3a
they suppose to be called muslims as prophet mohamad said about this nation
they are suppose to be called muslims not shi3a coz they love IMMAMs and they are honest they are not the shi3a the IMMAMs themselves cursed

In Karbala it was Muslims against Heathens, Yazid was not a Muslim.

As for Palestine it's a struggle for power, Hamas supported by Iran, Syria, or Fatah supported by the us and israel. While Hamas was democratically elected by it's own people.

In Iraq, it's a stretch from the strugle that began in Karbala til now, The Shias were the oppressed there since Karbala, and now they are in power, and now the Sunnis feel oppressed, or want reveng.

As for Lebanon, it's a struggle between a patriotic opposition against a corrupt goverment that sold itself to israel and the us.

You left quite a large time gap between Karbala and modern events lol. Although this is true it is a very vague argument, all races have been killing each other since the beggining of time. it's clearly not a race thing.
