I think upgrading SAF MIG-21 would be a serious waste of time and resources. Our 21's have been used up to the max and then some during the wars and sanctions without following proper or any overhaul cycles. It would take some serious cash injections to get them up to standard, cash that simply isn't there. I like MIG-21 as well but considering the current state of our fighter force, i'd go with new fighters. Until then there's a possibility that few MIG-21UM's with 1 MIG-29UB will be the main fighter trainers of SAF.

Hahahaha! Good one It would be interesting to see for sure if the upgrades to a 21 I mentioned would be equivalent to the cost of an Su-30. Somehow I think it would be much less. Upgrades are always cheaper, besides, once the Su-35S come into production, there won't be anymore Su-30 and the 35 will be beaucoup $$$$$!!!

Thanks SVRS!

I've always wondered, being a HUUUGE MiG-21 fan (you can't tell right? ) if it was possible to make very slight alterations to that air frame to bring it right into the 21st century such as: 1) increase fuel capacity by either introducing conformal or non-conformal fuel tanks. 2) Increase power to weight ratio by installing new and efficient custom made engine. 3) Install new avionics updated to today's standards including a Fly By Wire system. 4) And of course give it the best available radar with great BVR capable weapons and capabilities. This would turn this bird into a menacing ravaging modern sadistic gruesome sensational killing machine! What do you think?

Very difficult to say. All surviving MIG-21 aircraft are located at Batajnica Air Base. Considering that prior to the war of 90's there were 7 MIG-21 squadrons, 5 of them located at Zeljava and Slatina, there's a strong possibility that these examples might be from one of those bases.
