They probably are getting 'first-rate' technology from Russia, China and the Ukraine. In fact, the turret of the new main battle tank resembles that of the M1, but truth be told, the Type 98 has a Westernesque turret as well [the turret bustle, and shape of the mantlet], and so the Type 98/99 might have been an inspiration as well. All the while, it probably has a similar autoloader to that of the casette [not the Tosan, mind you, the Zulfiqar]. But, like I said before, Iran is probably looking to mature it's own tank industry, as opposed to just buying them off foreign producers.

I agree with everything stated here... I wonder if they were able to fix the suspension and fire control to fire while mobile? From what I hear it's not such an easy task to overcome for a new industry like Iran.

Yes they have done that in upgrades for T-55, T-72 and Cheiftan tanks. Lasar range finder (day & night), fire while on the move, Gun stabelizer while on the move and a few other ones. I will post the article from Iran (Shiraz industry as soon as I find it).

Statements from Iran are always slippery things. I think the T72S is being assembled under licence from Russia. The Zoliqufar has been shown in some numbers in three different marks. buy the way, does anyone think the Zoliqufar is a rebuild of old US M 48 and M60 tanks supplied to the Shah, it seems possible in that the running gear seems derived from the M series. anyway, that is two medium battle tanks under production at the same time. then there is the Tosan, which we are not sure of. i am begining to think the Zoliqufar may be another of the many trial projects and not a production tank at all. for years now there have been no hard data slip out that would indicate a true production tank.

lol, 50cal bullets go rite through those things...(light tanks).
Theey only weight about 10 tons less.....and a 50cal bullet is almost stopped when it pounds against an MBT or APC.....but i must agree they are great for urban warfare or where gaurillas are least expected to have 50 cals.

Err, no? Light tanks normally weigh between 20-35t. A light tank would be heavier than an armoured personnel carrier. And please refer to the other thread for information on the plausibility of a .50cal bullet penetrating either one.

AFAIK, it's based off the M48 and T-72, with a Type 98/99 turret look-a-like, which looks like that of the M1 or the Challenger 2E simply because the Chinese decided to adopt a more Western looking turret.

You're thinking about the FV101 Scorpion, which weighs ~8 tonnes. Nevertheless, to put that into perspective the Stryker APC weighs 6.95 tonnes. Any Iranian variant will probably weigh more, as instead of something like the post-WWII Scorpion they'll want something closer to an actual modern light tank, like the ASCOD Pizarro light tank variant.
