Default List of countries wanting to auire nukes during cold war

There seems to be quite a lot of countries whose governments, in the early cold war seriously considered adopting nuclear weapons but then encountered too much opposition (domestic and foreign) to implement this.

I have 2 countries in my list so far:

Germany

Switzerland

This site lists some additional countries: http://nuclearweaponarchive.org/Nwfaq/Nfaq7-4.html , but Germany is missing.

This site focuses on Italy, but also mentions Yugoslavia and Romania having a nuclear-weapons program: http://www.astronautix.com/lvs/alfa.htm

Note that it only mentions an Italian ballistic missile project, not development of actual warheads.

This site looks like it's quite comprehensive: http://www.isis-online.org/mapproject/worldmap.html

Iran
The Shah wanted nukes more than he wanted to be European. Little did he know that his beloved West would never allow it.

Indeed. America didn't even allow Germany, a much closer 'ally' to have it. But I'm sure the shah would have been more able to deal with internal opposition to nukes than the German leadership at the time.

On that last link I provided, click on Canada. Looks like that country was thoroughly raped by the US, what nuclear-weapons research is concerned.

US' own military equipment is very old and outdated. Especially their ground equipment. The new stuff they make are all sold to foreign countries. They do not have the money to modernize their own military.

The sig is a quote from a fictional news report in the real-time strategy game Command & Conquer Generals. It is about some sort of global war involving the USA, China and a fictional force called the Global Liberation Army. In a segment of the storyline the forces of one of the GLA-leaders, "Dr Thrax" are defeated. He was using toxin and anthrax-based weapons for pretty much anything making him a threat not just to the USA, but also to the GLA since there was a high risk the GLAs own territories would be contaminated. At least, that's how I interpreted it :S.

The game is somewhat based on recent political developments. For instance, there is one USA mission in which a superweapon called a "Scud Storm" in Baghdad needs to be taken out. In another, you need to "liberate" the fictional "Amisbad Oil Fields" in Iran to cut funding to Dr Thrax. Then there's a GLA mission in which you make an incursion into the USA to raid their weapons of mass destruction.

Like two other games in the Command & Conquer series, Generals mixes real-world weapons systems (e.g. Humvee, Scud Launcher, MiG ***) with comic-book style ones (for example monstrous double barrelled "Overlord" tank, MLRS buggies, a Rambo-like hero called Colonel Burton) which I think is quite cool.

The game's been out for quite a while so it should be dirt-cheap now. You might wanna check it out if you're into that kind of stuff and have some spare time on your hands .

Not true.
Germany didnt aquire nukes because of political reasons, the population would have killed the politicans on the streets.

In case of NATO is getting attacked Germany is getting 200 American Nukes based in Rammstein under its command, German tornado pilots are training with that nukes very often!

I think it was domestic. Their program was chronically underfunded. Switzerland doesn't have a history of bending over for anyone...except that thing with the descendants of holocaust victims whose money was stolen by the nazis and stored in Swiss banks apparently.

One of Australia's most poorly kept military secrets that all the public has known for years is that Australia is nuclear armed.
Probably obtained from England as the Pommies tested their nukes in the South Australian outback in the 50's and 60's
And Australia has 10 FB-111A's beside's the F-111c.
Other countries that have been suspected are
South Africa
Argentina
Brazil

I know. I've seen a Luftwaffe F-104 with a B-43 nuke in a museum once.
